Active Listening Skill #3

The third skill for active listening is: Request Clarification

When another is speaking, perhaps responding to a question you asked, it is quite easy to misunderstand their point.  Active listening provides the opportunity to ask for further clarification to help to avoid assuming.  For example, a phrase like “Help me to understand you better…could you repeat what you just said?” allows the other to clarify.  If there is doubt or confusion about what is being shared, allow yourself the freedom to ask for clarification. Most speakers will be willing to attempt to explain themselves in other ways.  Oh, by the way, don’t forget to say “thank you” when the speaker provides more clarification!

I’d be honored to receive your comments!
